North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Donald Aashawn Haywood, 25, of 1403 Brookwood Circle, High Point, was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Haywood of attempting to obtain $720 by filing a fraudulent claim with USAA Insurance.

According to the criminal summons, Haywood claimed the bridal ring was lost while on a cruise. However, it was determined he was not on the cruise but deployed at the time.

The offenses occurred between Jan. 21 and Feb. 16.

Special agents served a criminal summons on Haywood on Oct. 28. He is due in Randolph County District Court on Nov. 15.

“Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime; we all pay for it through higher insurance premiums,” said Commissioner Causey. “Help us keep insurance premiums low by reporting suspected fraud.”
